A Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist for Quebec Businesses starts with a question: who actually controls the listing? I check profiles for small businesses from my office in Mascouche, and that question comes first every time. If someone else still has access, they can undo whatever you fix in the name, category or hours.

A Google Business Profile Optimization Checklist for Quebec Businesses starts with ownership and verification

Google Business Profile ownership comes first because you can't change a listing you don't control. Confirm who the primary owner is before you edit anything.

I often meet owners in Mascouche and Montréal who lost access because a former employee or an old marketing supplier set up the listing years ago and never handed over the login. Search your business name on Google Maps. If a profile exists and you don't manage it, use the "Own this business?" link and follow Google's official process to request ownership. Once you're in, check the list of managers and remove anyone who no longer works with you.

Business name, primary category and services on a Google Business Profile

A Google Business Profile name should match your storefront and your legal paperwork, with no keywords added. The primary category and services list then tell Google which searches your profile fits.

Choosing the primary category that matches your main revenue service

The primary category should match the service that brings in most of your revenue. Google lets you pick only one, and it uses that choice to decide which searches your profile can appear for.

Pick the one that sounds impressive and you can end up invisible for the work that pays the bills. These are the questions I go through with owners:

Question Why it matters
What service earns the most money? Your primary category should match it
What do customers type when they search? The category should reflect real search behaviour
Is there a more specific category option? A specific category usually describes you better than a general one
Does it match your main service page? It keeps your website and profile aligned
Can secondary categories cover the rest? The primary category doesn't have to do everything

Secondary categories and the services list

Secondary categories cover the other real services you offer. A plumber who also does drain cleaning or water heater installs can add those, as long as they describe actual work, not keywords you wish applied to you.

The services list inside the profile is where the detail goes. Name each service, add a short plain-language description, and include pricing only if you're comfortable sharing it. I tell owners to treat it like a small menu, so Google can match the profile to the specific searches customers type. If you'd rather have someone set this up properly, that's the work behind our Google Business Profile service.

Address, service area and hours for Québec customers

Address, service area and hours should describe how customers actually reach you. Show a physical address only if people visit you there; otherwise set a service area that covers the towns you really serve.

A renovation contractor working out of a home office in Terrebonne, for example, would hide the address and list the service area instead. A boutique on a main street would show the address so Maps can send people to the door. Regular hours should match what's posted on the window, and they need updating whenever they change.

Statutory holiday hours: Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Canada Day and the Holiday season

Holiday hours for Saint-Jean-Baptiste on June 24, Canada Day on July 1 and the December holidays should be set in advance. Otherwise customers can show up to a locked door.

Open the "Special hours" section and add each date, including Christmas, Boxing Day and New Year's Day. If you close early or stay closed all day, say so. I also post a short update explaining the schedule change. Owners who skip this tend to get confused calls and frustrated reviews in some of the busiest weeks of the year.

Bilingual descriptions, French search wording and name consistency

Bilingual descriptions work best when each language is written for the people searching in it. A word-for-word translation of one version rarely matches how either group phrases a search.

A lot of businesses around Mascouche are found through French searches, so I write the French description first and then a natural English version. I check the French for the words customers actually use, like "traiteur" rather than "catering" or "quincaillerie" rather than "hardware store." With Loi 96 in force, French generally needs a strong place in what a Québec business shows the public, so check with a qualified advisor if you're unsure how it applies to you.

Name consistency matters just as much. The business name, address and phone number should read the same on Google, your website, your social pages and any directories, with no shortened versions. That consistency helps Google, and AI-assisted search tools such as AI Overviews, work out which business is which, though it guarantees nothing about rankings.

Photos, reviews and owner replies on a Google Business Profile

Photos, reviews and owner replies show customers, and Google, that a real business is active behind the listing. Use photos of your actual premises and work, never stock images.

I upload new shots of the storefront, the team and the work every few weeks, with French or English captions where they help. For reviews, I ask satisfied customers right after a job is done and send them a direct review link by text or email. If you text that link, keep Loi 25 in mind in general terms: only use contact details customers gave you, for the purpose they expect.

Reply to every review, good or bad, in the language the customer wrote in. A short, honest reply tells the next visitor that someone actually runs the place.

Phone number, website links and call tracking from Google Maps

The phone number and website link decide whether a call from Maps becomes a lead you can measure or one you never hear about. Both need to be correct and consistent with your site.

The number on the profile should match the one on your website and in directories, since mismatched numbers confuse Google and customers alike. The website link should go to a page built to turn visitors into calls or quote requests, which isn't always the homepage. On a phone, tap the call button yourself and make sure it reaches a person or a working voicemail.

To see which calls actually come from the profile, set up call tracking from Google Maps with a dedicated number that forwards to your main line, and record calls and bookings as conversions in GA4. Our call conversion tracking service handles that setup, so you can tell profile calls apart from website or ad calls.

Monthly Google Business Profile maintenance checklist

A monthly Google Business Profile check catches problems before they cost you calls. It takes a short session once a month.

  • Confirm hours, phone number and address still match the website, especially after holidays or a move
  • Reply to any new reviews you missed
  • Add one or two new photos and answer any new questions on the profile
  • Look at the profile's call and direction numbers, and your GA4 conversions, for sudden drops

A sudden dip often means something broke, like a disconnected phone line or a suspended listing. If you're not sure what your profile needs, the quote form on our contact page is the easiest place to start.
