# Google AI Overviews and Small Businesses: What Changes for Local Searches

On October 28, 2024, Google announced the full rollout of AI Overviews in Canadian search results, in English for now. A Grand Montréal client asked me the following week whether that changes anything for their business. Here is what I can answer based on what we are already seeing in the Search Console accounts we manage, and what that data still cannot tell us at this point.

## What is an AI Overview in Google search results?

An AI Overview is a summary Google generates at the top of the results page, above the usual organic links, that answers the query directly and cites a handful of sources with links to their sites. Google had been testing this under the name Search Generative Experience in the United States, then renamed it and rolled it out more broadly in May 2024 at its Google I/O conference. It tends to appear for informational searches, the kind that start with how, why or what is the difference between, rather than for searches where someone clearly wants to buy or call right away.

## Since when have AI Overviews existed for searches done from Canada?

Since October 28, 2024, according to Google's announcement. The rollout covers English-language searches; French is not yet supported, and Google has not given a date for adding it. That makes this a very recent feature as of this writing, and there is not much history yet to draw firm conclusions about its longer-term effect.

## Does this affect a local search like "plumber service area North Shore"?

Not directly, at least not visibly yet. Local results (the three-listing map pack under the paid ads) come from the same system that existed before AI Overviews arrived, and they still rely on your Google Business Profile: category, reviews, photos, and consistent name and phone number. What is changing is more the top of the [search engine results page](/en/glossary/#serp) for somewhat broader searches, things like "how to choose a plumber" or "when should I replace my water heater," where an AI Overview can now sit above even the map pack. A business that only targets very transactional queries should not see much movement for now. A business whose content answers broader questions may see organic traffic behave a bit differently on those specific queries.

For a service-area business covering several Grand Montréal municipalities, that distinction is worth keeping in mind when planning site content. Pages that exist to be found by a customer ready to call, a service page for each city or district, for example, do not need to be rewritten for this reason. It is the blog posts and FAQ pages, the ones that explain a problem before offering a solution, that benefit most from answering clearly in the first few lines.

## How can I tell if my site is showing up in an AI Overview?

Search Console cannot confirm that with any certainty yet. As of this writing, the tool does not separate impressions that come from an AI Overview from impressions that come from a regular organic result: they are counted together in the standard performance report, under the same query and the same page. You can spot a clue, such as an informational query where impressions climb while clicks stay flat or dip slightly, but that is not proof the AI Overview caused it. I would rather say that plainly than credit a traffic shift to a feature we cannot yet isolate in the data.

Manually checking a query in an incognito browser window is the closest thing to direct confirmation available right now, since an AI Overview will either show up on the page or it will not for that specific search at that moment. That is useful for spot-checking a handful of important queries, but it does not scale to the hundreds of queries a small business site might rank for, and results can vary between searches on the same query depending on the exact wording used and even the device. Treat it as a sampling tool, not a full audit.

## Will this cost traffic to sites that already answer questions well?

That is the worry we hear most often, and it is not new. It existed with featured snippets well before AI Overviews, for the same kind of informational queries. An AI Overview can answer a question thoroughly enough that some searchers will not click any link, which is usually called a zero-click search. At the same time, the feature cites sources with clickable links, which means a site can also gain visibility with people who would never have seen its name otherwise, even if they do not click right away. With only a few days of history since the Canadian rollout, it is too early to say whether the net effect is positive or negative for any given site, and it likely varies a lot by query type and industry. The good news is that none of what we recommend to prepare for AI Overviews works against regular organic search: the same clear, well-structured, honest content helps in both cases.

## What can a small business do right now?

Without a dedicated measurement tool, the best approach is still to get the fundamentals right: Google says AI Overviews draw on its regular ranking systems.

1. Answer the question directly in the first sentences of a section before adding context or detail.
2. Structure content with subheadings that ask a real question, so a precise answer is easy to find and easy to cite.
3. Keep your business information consistent everywhere it appears (name, address or service area, phone number), since the same data feeds the systems trying to confirm who you are.
4. Skip keyword-stuffing in the hope of influencing an automated system. It never worked well for traditional SEO, and there is no sign it helps any more with a generated summary.
5. Name who is writing the content clearly, with a real about page, rather than publishing text credited to an abstract company name, so a reader can easily judge who is behind the information they are reading.
6. Keep checking Search Console regularly, query by query, even without a dedicated report. A trend shift on a specific informational query is still the best signal available for now, and comparing the same weeks year over year, rather than two back-to-back weeks, helps avoid mistaking normal fluctuation for a real change.

## Does this affect French-language content the same way?

Not for now, since AI Overviews only cover English searches in Canada as of this rollout. A business that publishes mainly in French should not see this specific feature appear on its main queries right away. That does not mean it is worth waiting to get things right: the same principles of clear, well-structured content already help regular organic search today, and they will be ready the day the feature extends to French, without a last-minute scramble to rebuild content from scratch.

This is the kind of tracking we do in our [AI search visibility](/en/geo-visibilite/) work: watching what actually moves in a client's data, rather than reacting to every announcement as though it changes everything overnight.
